Intrafamily Transfers of Small Businesses

CCH Editorial Staff

Millions of small business owners are approaching retirement age as the first members of the baby boomer generation reach age 60. Many small business owners want their children to take over the business after they retire.

This course explores some of questions that practitioners can expect when a small business client announces that he or she is planning to transfer the business, most often to an adult child.

Topics covered include:

  • Making a succession plan
  • Tools to transfer a small business, including private annuities, self-canceling installment notes, buy-sell agreements, grantor retained annuity trusts (GRATs), and family limited partnerships.
  • Valuing a small business
  • Allocation of purchase price
  • Final federal payroll tax responsibilities
