J. Russell Madray, CPA, CIA, CMA, CFM
An examination is analogous to a financial statement audit. In an examination, the practitioner expresses an opinion on whether the subject matter or assertion about the subject matter is in conformity with given criteria. The examination requires the practitioner to reduce the risk of undetected material misstatement to a low level, and it involves substantial gathering of evidence.
This course reviews the criteria necessary for conducting an effective examination engagement. The author uses several exhibits to illustrate key concepts. Topics covered include:
- Engagement acceptance requirements of attestation standards
- Applying the materiality concept to an engagement
- Restriction or reduction of attestation risk in an engagement
- Level of testing needed to reduce risk
- Using specialists to assist with an engagement
- Drafting a representation letter
- Subsequent events
- Attest documentation
- Examination reports
