2008 Tax News and Legislation
Author: CCH Editorial Staff

Description:
The four major tax acts passed by Congress thus far in 2008 all include tax incentives to encourge consumer and business spending and investment. These acts are:

  • The Economic Stimulus Act of 2008
  • The Housing and Economic Recovery Act of 2008
  • The Heroes Earning Assistance and Relief Act of 2008
  • The Heartland, Habitat, Harvest, and Horticulture Act of 2008

Many of the provisions in these 2008 acts are temporary and will be allowed to expire or will be renewed in future years. This on-again/off-again situation creates many planning challenges for practitioners and their clients. This course explores the more widely applicable tax breaks included in these four acts including the following:

  • Economic stimulus payments
  • Bonus depreciation
  • First-time homebuyer tax credit
  • Revised home sale gain exclusion
  • Incentives for military personnel and their families
  • Tax incentives targeted primarily to farmers

This course also reviews the Mortgage Forgiveness Debt Relief Act of 2007, which includes a limited exclusion for cancelled debt that was previously taxable.
